5-Man Lineout Attack

Starting platform

5-man lineout

Best / situation

Five-man lineout with space to attack back toward the lineout touchline

Objective

Shift backs toward the lineout side and attack the short side with forwards joining the continuation.

How it works

  1. As the throw is made, 15 and 11 move toward the lineout-side touchline.
  2. 10 receives in a deeper position and runs forward in balance.
  3. 8 calls outside 10 while 7 wraps wider back toward the lineout.
  4. 10 finds 7 on the inside line; 7 then links with 11.
  5. 11 has 15 and the thrower available, while lineout players hold initially and then join the continuation.

Coaching points

  • Do not crowd the short side before the ball is won.
  • 10 needs enough depth to receive, scan and run forward.
  • 7 must arrive at pace on the wrap rather than drifting early.
  • Lineout players stay available to join the next passing wave.

Variations

  • The next receiver can use 15, the thrower or a lineout forward joining as the attack continues.
