5-Man Lineout Attack

Starting platform

5-man lineout

Best / situation

From around the attacking 10 metre line forward

Objective

Keep the ball alive while going forward and stretch the defence toward the far edge.

How it works

  1. Win the throw toward the back of the five-man lineout and give 9 clean ball.
  2. 9 gives 10 a long pass. 10 runs in balance, then changes line and pace toward the next defender.
  3. 8 offers on the inside while 12 first moves wide and then straightens.
  4. 10 passes across 12 to 13, who keeps a straight threat before releasing 7 wrapping outside.
  5. 7 attacks with 15 and 14 in support while 11 works across as an inside option on 15.

Coaching points

  • Carry in two hands and scan forward before committing to the next action.
  • Change pace and angle without drifting across the field.
  • Commit a defender before passing and keep support players proactive.
  • Practice the sequence against defenders so timing is built under pressure.

Variations

  • The source explicitly encourages coaches to fine-tune the outside wrap and support relationships for their personnel.
