5m Lineout — France

The throw goes to the designated jumper; as it clears the forward stepping out, the jumper transfers off the top to that runner while the supporting forwards block the immediate channel and the hooker drives through.

Starting platform

5 metre lineout

Best / situation

Attacking lineout five metres from the try line

Objective

Transfer off the top to a forward stepping out of the line, then drive through the created channel.

How it works

  1. Throw to the designated middle target.
  2. As the throw clears the forward assigned to step out, that player leaves the line.
  3. The jumper transfers the ball off the top directly to the stepping runner.
  4. The supporting forwards engage the immediate channel as the hooker drives into the opening.
  5. The carrier and support drive toward the try line.

Coaching points

  • Timing of the step-out must match the throw.
  • The off-the-top transfer must be clean and immediate.
  • Support players must stay legal and connected rather than obstructing defenders away from the ball.
  • This is source-specific “France” terminology.

Variations

  • The source presents France as a five-metres-out option within its broader lineout calling system.
