Kick Attack

Starting platform

attacking scrum

Best / situation

Inside or around the attacking 22 when the defending fullback has joined the line

Objective

Attack the space behind the first defensive line and put 15 onto the kick at pace.

How it works

  1. Set a relatively flat attacking line with 15 wide and in the line.
  2. 10 attacks the gap between the opposing 10 and 12 to hold the first defensive line.
  3. Close to the line, 10 chips or grubbers into the space behind 13.
  4. 15 runs on an angle toward the posts and attacks the ball in that space.
  5. 7 and 8 link with 15 so the attack can keep the ball alive after the gather.

Coaching points

  • Kick only after the defence has been threatened.
  • The kick target is space behind 13, not the defender.
  • 15 times the run to arrive onto the ball rather than waiting for it.
  • 7 and 8 transition immediately into support.

Variations

  • The source explicitly allows either a grubber or chip depending on the space and defensive picture.
