Kick Attack

Starting platform

attacking scrum

Best / situation

Attacking scrum near the 22 when the defending fullback stays deep in the pocket

Objective

Sell attack to one side, then kick back across the scrum into space for the far winger.

How it works

  1. Present the same initial attacking picture from the scrum.
  2. 10 runs square at the defensive line so the defence must respect the carry/pass threat.
  3. 10 chips back across toward the far side of the scrum.
  4. The far winger runs forward onto the kick and competes to gather.
  5. 6 and 8 provide the first support around the receiver.

Coaching points

  • Keep 10 square enough to kick accurately across the field.
  • Do not advertise the reverse kick with early movement.
  • The winger should practice gathering while moving forward.
  • 6 and 8 must react as support rather than watch the kick.

Variations

  • Kick height and distance should match the available space and the receiver’s running line.
