Beating the Drift

Starting platform

midfield phase

Best / situation

Four attackers against three defenders with a drifting defensive picture

Objective

Straighten and accelerate to hold the drift before releasing the outside runner and using the wrap.

How it works

  1. First receiver scans, straightens and accelerates toward the defender in the channel.
  2. The pass is released only after the defender is held.
  3. The next carrier stays straight with an inside and outside passing option.
  4. The outside receiver attacks the inside shoulder of the next defender.
  5. The inside support wraps into the space created outside.

Coaching points

  • Receive out in front and look forward early.
  • Straighten off the outside foot and accelerate to hold the tackler.
  • Carry in two hands so pass and carry remain credible.
  • Support runners stay straight long enough to hold defenders before the wrap develops.

Variations

  • The source suggests developing the same 4v3 picture into a 5v4 and adding kick options once the defence is manipulated.
