Kick Attack

Starting platform

wide attack

Best / situation

Ball received wider than midfield after the defensive line and fullback have moved up

Objective

Exploit space behind the advanced edge defence with a centre kick for the wing.

How it works

  1. Move the ball into a genuine wide attack so the defence advances and shifts.
  2. The centre identifies space behind and away from the cover.
  3. The centre kicks into that space for the wing rather than simply continuing the pass chain.
  4. The wing runs onto the ball and gathers under pressure.
  5. 15 supports through and 12 works as the inside continuity option.

Coaching points

  • The kick follows defensive manipulation; it should not be automatic.
  • The wing must expect to gather and pass under pressure.
  • 15 runs through as immediate support.
  • 12 protects continuity from the inside.

Variations

  • The exact kick can be adapted to the depth and movement of the backfield cover.
